Definition of Quadrilateral

Every closed figure made up of four sides is called a quadrilateral. There are 6 types of quadrilaterals. Given below are the definitions of all the quadrilaterals along with the formulas for their perimeters and areas:-


Square: A quadrilateral whose four sides are equal and all four angles are equal (90°).

Perimeter = 4 × Side
area = side × side


Rectangle: A quadrilateral whose opposite sides are equal and all four angles are equal (90°).

Perimeter = 2 (Length + Width)
area = Length × Breadth


Rhombus: A quadrilateral whose four sides are equal and opposite angles are equal.

Perimeter = 4 × Side
area = Base × Height
          Or
area = 1/2 × (diagonal 1 × diagonal 2)

Parallelogram: A parallelogram is a type of quadrilateral whose opposite sides are parallel and equal. 

Opposite  angles of a parallelogram are also equal.

Perimeter = 2 (Length + Width)
Area = Base × Height

Trapezium: A trapezoid is a quadrilateral whose two sides are parallel. We call Trapezium in English as Trapezium.

perimeter = sum of sides
area = 1/2 × (a + b) × h

Kite: A Kite is a type of quadrilateral whose two pairs of adjacent sides are equal.

Perimeter = 2 (Length + Width)
area = 1/2 × (diagonal 1 × diagonal 2)
